REGION NINE MEMBERS-

HAPPY NEW YEAR.

I hope you all had a great holiday season. Today, I'm writing to you to ask if you would be interested in volunteering your precious time and efforts to the NPPA and run for a Region Nine office. This is your opportunity to make a great difference in the NPPA and Region Nine. Region Nine is looking for a few great men and women photographers to run for office. We are looking for folks to run for the position of Director and Associate Director. Bruce Thorson, Region Nine's associate Director, and I plan to run for our respected positions, again. But I would like to encourage you to run if you feel you would like to contribute to the NPPA and this great Region. If you are interested please feel free to contact me and I would be happy to give you more information. It is an amazing opportunity. Or you can visit:
http://www.nppa9.org/nucleus/index.php?action=createitem&blogid=1 for additional information.

For the past two years I have been proud to serve you as your Region Nine Director. We have many things I feel we can do in the NPPA and Region Nine and I would hope to serve you again. Bruce Thorson, has also played an instrumental role in Region Nine for the past two years. This past year he went to the NPPA Board meeting in Portland, Oregon, representing our region.

We look forward in hearing from you.
Thank you for your time and please send me any questions, comments or concerns.
COMMENTS:

SPOT NEWS:

Sorry for being so tardy with the clips judging, I hate when I have to wait this long, so once again, SORRY. This category rocked! Spot News usually is a pretty easy category to judge but not this time. Great stuff everyone! Took us a half an hour to get down to five and another to get down to the three winners.
First place, great spot news and nicely framed to boot. Great work!
Second place, of all the awesome fire pictures in this category we really liked this one the best. The long smoky line on the ridge has a nice feel to it.
Third place, wow, anytime you have someone with a bucket of water against a wall of flame, you have a picture!!!

GENERAL NEWS:

Another good category.
We liked first place because we felt that the photographer went out and bought us a picture with layers when it would have been easier to just shoot the woman with the flag. The photographer’s creativity was rewarded! Second, we liked the fact that the photographer did a good job scouting the location and brought back a lightly less cliché picture.
Third, the light is crappy, composition is sketchy, but, emotion is there!!!!

SPORTS:

After seeing the News categories and Feature pictures, we were a little disappointed in the sports category. Fist place, nice face, nice moment, great picture. Second place, good action, we would love to see the next frame. Third place, nice clean Jubo!

FEATURE/SINGLE PICTURES

Feature, this category rocked.
We loved the first place, demonstrates that features can be found everywhere. The photo had great expression and motion!
Second nice composition and color, good looking!
Third, a less obvious place to look for a weather feature but all the weather elements come together beautifully!

FEATURE/ MULTIPLE PICTURES:

First place took a lot of time and covered a large story very well with a lot of pictures and all of them strong!
Second place is a story we all have covered at sometime in our business, but the photographer did a great job in bringing some good human emotions to the story.
Third, good work with a topic when getting access to the prisoners and access to where their evidence is being stored. Tough assignment to shoot done very well!

Judges:
Steve russell, Staff Photographer, Toronto Star
Bernard Weil, Chief Photographer Multimedia, Toronto Star
Aaron Lynett, Year-long Intern, Toronto Star
Spot News Comments
The first place photo of a man trying to fight back a wild fire with a wet towel was a very nice image that showed us something we don’t always see. It’s a nice break from the excepted wildfire photos usually seen. The second place photo was also a really nice image of a woman with a tree that fell on her home. The photographer really composed this imagine and made a nice image from an otherwise boring event. Third was a photo of firefighters silhouetted on a hillside fighting a wildfire. A moody shot that could have ben a bit stronger with a crop on the left side of the frame.

General News
The first place photo caught all of our attention. The photo of a dead soldier in a casket with a photo of his daughter on his chest was a tough photo to make but a poignant photo. The photographer showed us something we hadn’t seen before an told us a powerful story in the process. Well done. Second place was also a very nice clean image. Nicely composed, the photo captured a nice quiet moment. Third we still aren’t sure what to think of this photo but it made us stop and look several times and in the end we thought there must be something to it so we felt it deserve to be recognized. Making people stop and look is what our business is all about.

Sports
Overall this category wasn’t the strongest of the group. The first place photo was a nice image from the rodeo. Not the typical rodeo photo. The second place photo was a nice photo of a victory. The third place photo was another nice image from a triathlon. The photographer composed it well and caught a great expression on the swimmer’s face in the foreground of the photo.

Feature/Single Picture
The first place photo was an interesting photo of people silhouetted with arms raised. A nice image that has many layers and forces the view to look through the image. The second photo was an interesting photo of a sculpture being painted. A good feature photo. The third place image from a relay for life was a really clean image and not the usual relay for life photo.

Feature/Multiple Picture
The first place story was powerful story of a soldier’s funeral. There were many compelling images from this story. The photographer did a good job at getting access quickly to a story and developing a trust with the family to allow him to photograph such a personal story. Both the second place and third place stories had some good images. The second place story was edited much tighter. The third place story needed a much tighter edit. For a lot of the entries in this category people seemed to be entering all the photos published on the web without editing.

Illustration
First place was a nice illustration portrait of a swimmer. The second place photo was an interesting image with nice lighting and the third place photo was a nice image of a track star. We thought it might have been a bit stronger if he was actually running instead of being in the blocks.

Spot News Comments
The First place photograph exhibited a nice angle on a crash rescue.
Second place demonstrated nice emotion amongst devastation from the deadly tornado.
Third Place did a nice job of composing the firemen in the lower right to show the scale of the fire.
Overall we felt the category was thin with entries and a lot of pictures we felt were not spot news, but general news.

General News
First-Nice composition and angle for the officer remembered photo. We struggled over the first and second place pictures, but ultimately the woman blocking the casket was too distracting. Never-the-less the moment with all the women pallbearers was interesting and emotional evocative. The third place photo had good emotion, and was nice discipline on the part of the photographer to follow woman out of courtroom.

Sports
Category filled with nice basketball photos. First place-The composition and moment tell the complete story of the Northen Arizona teams’ relation to their loss to Weber State. There is no need for a caption in this photo, the image tells it all. Second place, great moment, good facial expressions. Third place, peak action and good moment.

Feature/Single Picture
First-Endearing moment, a nice light feature that is an interesting moment that occurs often. Second-Great juxtaposition with a bull on a leash passing a sign that say ‘pets must be on a leash.’ The photographer should have put the designer on a leash, because the headline was distracting from the irony of 1,000 pound bull on a leash walking next to that sign. Third-Nice lighting, interesting graphic to an ordinary moment.

Feature/Multiple Pictures
First-We wish we could get that type of play in out newspaper. Thorough story that documented many different angle. Compelling moments that showcase the amount of time and effort the photographer spent to get access to their subjects. Second-Nice story that covered all corners. Good moments, and clean crisp photos. Third-Nice group of photos telling a nice little story.

Illustration
First-Demonstrated the concept clearly, funny and technically well done. Was instant winner with the judges. Second-We don’t speak Spanish and still got the concept. Good idea for common problem for most photographers. Third-good way to illustrate player of the year photos.

Spot News
1) Real nice composition and moment helped us feel this for first. It was a back and forth battle with second place but the extra body language made this first.
2) Again, great composition like 1st place. Real clean and to the point.
3) Just a unique and different photo from this situation. The slow shutter speed lent itself to the urgency of the situation and the lone person looks so helpless. Nice light! THIS WAS THE WEAKEST OF ALL THE CATEGORIES.

General News
1) This photo has it all and probably was our "Cream of the Crop" phot of the whole judging. It has emotion, nice lensing and a heartbreaking element that stopped us in out tracks immediately for the first place. You definitely have a portfolio shot here! 2) Again another sweet photo from edge-to-edge. Perfect moment and the look for relief in the peoples faces made this second place (another portfolio shot here!)
3) Can I say portfolio shot again?!!!! Awesome composition, the element of excitement and composition of the cadet was just great! 1,2,3 were just the best and easiest to pick!

Sports
1) First place was unanimous...2 of us are regular sports shooters and we have never made this shot let alone seen one like it! Pure peak moment, timing and use of body language shot this to #1 very easily!!! 2) Second was a nice jubilation reacting to a winning goal. Nice choice of wide angle lens and working with available darkness! Moment, moment, moment!!! 3) Third was a nice tight, clean soccer shot we have all seen but it was easily third best of the bunch. Again, peak moment and timing made this rise into the top three.

Feature/Single
1) First grabbed us all from the start. Just a cure, quiet slice-of-life moment from what might have been a boring event. We applaud looking beyond the obvious with the different angle and composition! 2) Quite a different photo. The photographer took a chance and made a picture that grabs the imagination and I am sure the reader's attention! 3) This photo has it all-quiet moment composition, light and what it is like to be a kid from Texas visiting the beauty of the Rocky Mountain National Park-makes me want to go sometime!

Feature/Multiple Pictures

1) Decent story here. This was the weakest category next to spot news. First place took us away from the farm occasionally and took us into the lives of these farmers. Great opening portrait and the attention to detail. It is lacking a possible tight personality face shot that might give us a look inside the eyes of the oldest farmer, maybe. Not enough of these stories held a tight personality shot. They lend so much to a photo story. 2) Quite a unique page of track portraits. they all were done very well, lit with thought and followed a theme-nice job!! 3) Third was also a very well-done story. Beautiful light and attention to detail but we wanted to climb into maybe of a home shot of a cowboy getting ready to start his day or end it for that matter! Nice job and a super lead shot!
